In 1938, the klappspaten, or foldable spade, appeared, being the precursor of all modern spades of this kind. Copied directly from an original Klappspaten used a tempered steel blade, with correct screw tight deep red colored ribbed steel locking cuff, hardwood handle all secured with steel pins.
